Hey, it’s Tony from LearnAutoBodyAndPaint with another live stream. It’s another round of DIY Learn Auto Body And Paint Questions and Answers Live! Thanks for getting on tonight.
I am late. I am so sorry that I wasn’t able to send an email. My daughter wasn’t feeling well so I needed to check up on her. We’ll go ahead with your of DIY Learn Auto Body And Paint Questions and Answers.
Question: What’s a good body filler that you like?
The Evercoat Rage is a good brand. You also have the basic bondo brand.
Question: If you mix different dry pearl together, will you get a different color or would you get colors that you mix?
You pretty much get a different looking color. I’ve done a lot of testing with pearls over the years. It also depends what base you put it over. Most of the time, if you put gold pearl over black base, it looks goldish and greenish, depending on what pearls you used.
You can also mix pearls in your clear coat, which is what I like to do. You can use an intercoat, which is a clear base coat where you put your pearls in, spray that over your white base coat (Let’s say you’re doing a white base coat) so you don’t run it as much. Base coat is hard to run unless you’re really soaking it on.
Then, put your plain clear coat on top of that. You can also mix your pearls right on top of your clear coat then spray it.
The only thing is, you have to be careful not to run. If you run pearl or flake on clear coat, you’ll get that drippy pearl. If you try to color sand and buff it, you might have that drip of pearl.
I usually like to just mix it on my clear coat, because it’s easy. You get it in and it’s done. The pearls are so fine that you don’t have to lay a solid clear on top it. You can just finish it off with two coats of clear with pearl in it and then you’re done.
Question: I want to do a blue, red and green.
That’s going to be a crazy color. I wouldn’t do so much different colors like that because it will look funky. I would pick maybe 2 pearls. If you start mixing like that, you’re going to have a color change for sure.
Question: What do you think about Spray-On Chrome?
I think it’s cool. There’s a bunch of different kits out there. Usually, you’ll be spraying on chrome over black base coat. That’s the foundation to spray chrome over.
Question: I did the quarter panel of my Yukon about a month ago, and the clear coat is kind of flaking. What did I do wrong?
I don’t know what you did. It could be a bad clear, or improper sanding. It’s odd to have it flake like that. Basically, you have to do the job over.
You have to sand it smooth, put a fresh coat of base on it and clear. Make sure you use a good clear coat.
Question: Yellow spots on final paint. The color is white parts where I put bondo. What happened?
That’s probably because you didn’t seal it with a good 2K primer. Your bondo is bleeding through. Maybe you didn’t put enough primer on your bondo.
You want to make sure you prime over your body work to seal it up. Then, sand it with 400-grit, then do your base coat.
When you do your base coat, you’re not laid on too thin too either. You need to put a good heavy base on it, about two to three coats.
Question: What is the best primer to use?
I would use a 2K primer, a filler primer. It doesn’t matter what brand. It all depends on your budget. Although, I like Evercoat Polyester Primer. It’s a good filler primer which fills all the imperfections. You can sand it with a good 400-grit smooth.
If you’re using a cheaper clear coat and you get dye back, this is when paint loses its gloss. It happens when the paint cures and the solvent starts evaporating from your clear.
You can fix that is to basically color sand and buff it. You won’t tell if it’s a high end clear or a cheap clear, and I show you exactly how to do this within the LearnAutoBodyAndPaint VIP Program.
The same thing with a high end clear coat. You could still have a textured high gloss. It looks a little orange peely, and this is normal. You’ll still get that with new cars today.
If you want to get that flat mirror finish, just like the ones in a car show or a custom hot rod, you need to wet sand and buff it out.
You basically get a 2000-grit and block sand it until it looks flat matte and when you buff that, it looks like a seal’s back.
Question: What spray guns do you recommend?
Introducing the new Atom X Series Spray Guns. These are professional spray guns that will give you German and Japanese style, craftsmanship and performance for a fraction of the cost. Question: Do you prefer TIG or MIG?
It depends on what you’re doing. I haven’t been welding lately, but I have a MIG welder. TIGs are awesome as well.
We’re going to be raffling out some spray guns soon, when I get back to Texas. We’ll also have some shirts made for the auto body group.
Question: Where do you get your paint from?
I get it from English Color and Supply. They’re all around the States and they have their own paint mixing system.
Feedback: The Godfather Project was awesome! Have more of that.
Yes, absolutely. We have a lot of great feedback on that one. For those of you who want have exclusive access to The Godfather Project Series, check out the LearnAutoBodyAndPaint VIP Course. I have so much projects within the members area that you will also love.
Question: What are the first tools to buy for a newbie painter?
It’s nice to have an orbital sander or a DA Sander to cut some time, a spray gun, a buffer and some body tools like a hammer and dolly for basic body work. If you have extra money, you can get a stud gun and a small air compressor to power your tools. Then, you also need materials like some sand paper, masking tape, and of course paint.
Visit my blogs on LearnAutoBodyAndPaint. There are numerous topics on the materials that you will need for your project. Download your FREE 85-Page Auto Body And Paint Manual, if you’re just starting and want to know more about auto body.
Question: Do you recommend a straight sander from Harbor Freight?
Just be careful with Harbor Freight tools because some of them are really cheaply made. But, if you’re really on a budget, then try them out. It’s probably better than not having a straight sander. I have the Hutchins model, which costs around $250 about fifteen years ago and it still works great.

I have applied 2x clear about 6 months ago. Can I apply clear again without rubbing it down?
I would sand it with 1000 grit, then flow coat it.
Can you use laqurer clear coat over enamel paint?
I would not. I would spray a urethane clear over it. Learn more in VIP here: https://vip1.learnautobodyandpaint.com/exclusivevip
