Hey, it’s Tony from LearnAutoBodyAndPaint with another video for our Q&A series.
Here’s a POR POR15 question here from Mr. Gilman.
“Aloha Tony! I’ve been reading and watching videos about POR15 (rust preventive paint ). I have a couple of questions for you about this topic since I can’t find a direct answer so maybe you could help me. I recently acquired a classic VW Bug project that’s been, so I’ve been told, already to strip down to bare metal and the entire bug was sprayed and reduced with POR15 rust preventative. The questions I have are these:
1. Can I apply body filler over POR 15?
2. Am I able to spray basecoat clearcoat over the POR15 without having to apply a 2k primer? I know they have a POR15 top coat but I have plans for a nicer 2 or 3 stage paint job instead of a single stage.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.”
If they have a top coat for it, then yes, you can put any polyurethane, single stage enamel, acrylic enamel or basic clear coat directly on top.
To make sure the foundation is prep properl, you need to sand it with 400-grit. You could put body filler on top of it.
I would recommend scuffing up the areas that need body work with 80-grit. If you go back to metal on some areas, you could put more POR15 or you could seal it with 2k filler primer.
If you have a complete bare panel, you may want to use an epoxy primer or put more POR15 on top of that area.
I don’t know how big your project is, you said the whole bug is coated with POR15 so if you feel like your going to be doing a lot of body work around the car, you’ll need to have at least one body work spot on each panel. It would be great if there were some pictures of your project so I can give a more accurate recommendation.
But if you’re going over the whole car, it won’t hurt to go over the whole thing with a 2k filler primer on top of that.
You just need to make sure that the whole thing is sanded down with at least 320-grit with the DA sander before you put a 2k primer on top of it. Check out the video as I give you more pointers. 🙂 It’s Tony from LearnAutoBodyAndPaint. I hope this video helped you.
