Hey, it’s Tony from LearnAutoBodyAndPaint with another video for the Q&A series. Here’s a question from Cody.
“How are you doing, Tony? I’m a big fan of your work and I’ve learned everything I know from your videos. My problem is when I’m spraying a hood there are faded lines in it, not on other panels but just the hood.
I know it’s a bigger area to cover and I’ve tried putting down a dust coat. It helped but it still left splotches. It’s quite difficult to see on the pictures. I just want to know what I need to do to correct the problem. Thanks for all you do and videos you put out.”
I wish you would’ve told me if this is a single-stage or a base coat clear coat paint job. However, it looks like it’s a base coat clear coat paint job.
You have to be careful when spraying with single-stage acrylic or synthetic enamel because of the tendency to cause patching and tiger stripes. There are numerous reasons for these such as insufficient coverage, your spray gun not atomizing property and not having the correct pressure settings and not having your paint mixed well.
You need to make sure that you are using a good spray gun and your air cap and nozzle is clean and that it’s coming out evenly. You can test it on a panel or even a piece of paper to check the fan pattern.
Get at least a medium-grade spray gun and not cheap guns like Harbor Freight because they deteriorate quickly. If you want a good medium-grade spray gun, check out the Atom Spray Guns.
