The #BossPainter is back! Itβs Tony from LearnAutoBodyAndPaint. Today’s topic is Adding More Clear Coat to a Factory Paint Job For More Color Sanding and Buffing Room! This question came from John Warner.Β
βTony, I have a factory orange β07 Mustang GT. What would I have to do to add clear coat because I want to color sand and buff. I used some touch-up paint and everything looks really thin layers.β
Iβm confused with your question. Do you want to use clear coat where you put some touch-up? Or, do the entire thing so you can sand and buff?
Iβm going to assume that you want to add new clear coat to your Mustang to color sand and buff it.
You can block sand with 2500-3000-grit and buff it. Itβs thin paint but you can have a nice gloss from that.
If you want to proceed with clear coating it. I recommend that you sand it with 800-grit. Donβt go all the way down to the yellow. Just get to the clear coat and make it flat yellow.
And then, shoot two heavy coats of clear coat on top of it. That will give you enough clear coat to color sand and buff.
Iβd recommend using wax and grease remover for the decal. You can even clear coat on top of the decal.
