Tony B. Richie is back with another live stream! Today’s Q&A focus is Explaining Single Stage VS Two-Stage Paint.

I just released new content on my channel. The 2004 Honda CRV Off-Road Tire Preview Before Lift 225/75/15 😎 is already out. This is my first project since I came back. I am ready and all pumped up. I have so many projects in the pipeline and it’s exciting to finally start working on them. 🥳

Question: Can I fully paint a car with a small air compressor with an LVLP spray gun?

Yes, you can but it will be tricky because you’ll play catch-up with your air compressor. I’ve done it in the past with a 33-gallon air compressor. It takes a lot of time because you have to stop and wait for your tank to fill up again, so I don’t recommend painting a full car with a small air compressor.

Question: What is easier to paint with a small compressor, a single-stage or two-stage paint? 

Single-stage paint is a lot cheaper but there’s a lot of overspray. It’s a lot quicker too because all you need is to put 2-3 coats of paint and you’re finished.

On the other hand, the process of putting two-stage paint is longer because you need to put 2-3 coats of color and 2-3 coats of clear coat. My personal preference is 2 coats of color and 2 coats of clear. 

Question: Do I need a special clear coat to go over single-stage paint?

Absolutely not. You don’t need any special clear coat for single-stage paint.

Question: With a peeling clear coat, can I just respray clear or repaint the thing all over again?

You need to sand it down to refinish it and paint it. Since you’ll be going through the same exact process of prepping, you might as well put new color or base coat on it and then clear coat it.

It will not be a guarantee that it will match well and come out nice if you just put clear coat over your old paint.
