What Grit of Sandpaper Should You Use | How to Remove Paint Runs – Single Stage || More Q&A

Proper sanding will help to make the surface smooth and give it a better hold for the paint. Understanding grit on sandpaper is also one of the basic steps for faster and better paint removal. Knowing this, you need to determine what the average scuffing level will be for whatever project you are working on. QUESTION:  Have two coats of primer surfer. Do I use 400 over the primer sealer?

Yes, you could level it out, and block it out with 320 if you want but before painting, I would definitely get it down to 400 grit before painting. So I like to go 400 before painting the base coat, clear coat. For a single stage, you could actually final sand with around 320 – 360 if you want to do that, no issue.

QUESTION:  I got a run last night in my Single stage Candy Apple red paint job on my truck. I was putting the final coat on it. What do you recommend to remove or fix this problem?

You’re probably going to shoot that panel over if it’s a single-stage candy, depending on how your run looks. You might have a tint of that candy apple red run, you basically have two options. You could flatten it down, and try to let it sit for a couple of days.

I would sand it with 800 grit, get it flat, maybe go down to 1000, and then 1500, then you could probably try buffing it out. You could even go down to 2000 but if you notice a candy dark run, you’re gonna have to reshoot that panel. So hopefully it’s on a fender or something that you could just do that panel over if you have to.

QUESTION:  If I paint a single stage and see some flaws (bugs or dust) in the finish, how long should I wait before I can sand and buff?

For single-stage, I would give it a good one week. Let it sit for a week, let it cure, get hard, then do what you got to do. The longer the better so if you’re not in a rush then you could let it sit for 2 – 3 weeks. The harder the better and the more your paint cures the better. But usually single stage 5 – 10 days you got a pretty good cure for it.

QUESTION:  I wet-sanded it with 600 grit and sprayed it with some 2k white primer. Do I re-sand it again and if so what sandpaper grit do I use before I spray the chrome?

Are you going to be spraying blacker than chrome paint on top? Are you doing a chromatic color? If so, you could just finish with 400 to 600 grit, and spray your black base coat. Put 2 – 3 heavy coats of black on it and then spray your chromatic over and then clear coat.

QUESTION:  What grit to use to sand a single stage after waiting the time you said before?

If you’re going to be buffing out single-stage, you could use 1000 grit to cut it down. And then move to 1500 and 2000 grit and buff it out. If you’re going to be painting brand new single-stage over a 2k filler primer or over any kind of primer, you want to finish sanding with 400 grit.

Actually, if it’s single-stage, you could finish with 320, 360, or 400, anywhere around there. I wouldn’t go finer than 400 but single-stage is a thicker paint so it will cover up to 320 sand scratches with no problem. Like it’ll still look like glass if you paint over that.
