✅ Single stage paint = Cheaper materials and less labor work.
✅ Basecoat clearcoat = Higher material cost and more labor work required.
Single Stage Paint: Pros, Cons and Pricing
PROS
Cheap. Less prep work. You don’t need to be anal with prep. Thick paint covers imperfections. Average $150.00 Gallon Kit.
CONS
Not easily customizable. Nasty overspray (will change your shoe color). Not as easy to buff (especially metallics), but can be done. Won’t last as long as a good 2k paint.
Basecoat Clearcoat: Pros, Cons and Pricing
PROS
Longer lasting and more durable. Easily customizable to add pearls, flakes or candy. Easy to fix mistakes while painting your base and clear. Can easily colorsand and buff for professional finishes. More custom colors to choose from.
CONS
More expensive. More coats of paint required when painting. 2-3 base 2-3 clear. Means you go around the car 2-3x more. Longer time painting.

Basecoat: Average cost is $60 a quart. $250 a gallon
Clearcoat: Cheap – $120.00 gallon kit while High-end – $350.00 gallon kit. HOK.

Mucho body work $2,500 – $3,500. 10-15 small/medium size dents or deep scratches. 2-5 rust spots and faded paint. Not including door trunk and hood jambs – Add $300.
Material cost: Paint, primer, masking tape, sandpaper, masking paper, body filler, glaze = $300. YOU should profit $2,000 – $3,000 depending on job. Total job time should be no more than 40 total hours depending on your ability. Can be done sooner 3-4 days.
Friend and family discount should be a few hundred less. It’s up to you!

Material cost: $300 depending on job. You should profit $1,500 – $2,200. Total job time should be no more than 25 hours. Can be done in 1 day if experienced.

Mucho body work $3,500 – $6,500. 10-15 small/medium size dents or deep scratches. 2-5 rust spots and faded paint. Custom classic or body kit jobs w/full paint ($6-10k).
Material cost: Paint, primer, masking tape, sandpaper, masking paper, body filler, glaze = $1,000. YOU should profit $2,500 – $8,000 depending on job. Total job time should be no more than 7-10 full days. Jobs can run 2-4 weeks if you have jobs in between.
