Hey, it’s Tony from LearnAutoBodyAndPaint with another video for the Q&A series. Here’s a question from Mike.
“Hey Tony, it’s Mike. I have a 1999 GMC Yukon and was painted around June this year. Unfortunately, being a newbie I put painter’s tape under the door handle to protect the newly painted area from scratches the next day. When I removed the tape, I pulled off clear. I’m sending pictures to show you. I’ve watched your blending video. But, since it’s a metallic paint, do I need a base clear or inter coat clear to help orientation? I figured I would just blend both doors and clear. Appreciate all your help and encouragement, I really didn’t think I could paint the whole truck by myself! I hope all is well with you and your family.”
The only thing that you could do is sand it and clear, do the whole door again and just base it. Because it’s not a custom color and it’s just a basic silver, I don’t think you’ll have any blending issues at all, especially that it’s a new paint job.
You don’t need to worry about matching old paint with new paint. I definitely recommend just re-doing the door.
I mentioned in the LearnAutoBodyAndPaint VIP program that unmasking can be at the minimal, 2 hours after completing paint jobs.
You can even go as early as an hour after your paint job, but it depends on factors like your paint, your clear coat, dry speed, the brands that are used.
However, 1-2 hours is ideal. It’s dry enough but not too dry. It’s still wet to where you can pull off your masking tape without causing any damage to your paint. If you let it dry too long then you’ll risk pulling off your new paint.
