Hey, everyone! Tony B. Richie is back with another auto body Q&A and todayโs highlight question is Repairing And Painting A Dented Motorcycle Tank.
Glad to see everyone today! I hope you can hear me loud and clear. I see some familiar names who joined todayโs stream. Welcome, all the VIPs and non-VIPs! Hope everyoneโs doing great! ๐๐๐
Letโs proceed with our Q&A. ๐
Question: Question: I have a motorcycle tank I want to repaint. The only work that needs to be done is a small ding on the front. Iโm painting because itโs the wrong color. Iโm thinking, body fill the ding, sand the whole thing with 320-grit, 2k, wet sand with 400-grit, base coat and clear.
You need to scuff the entire area with 80-grit sandpaper. If you have a stud welder, you can grind that to metal, put a stud pin and pull it out.
However, you need to make sure that you empty out your gas tank, it isnโt wet, no fumes and all prior to doing that. Be extra careful! โ๏ธ
Another option is to tap around the dent with your body hammer very lightly to get the high spot down. Be careful not to create more dents to it so the tapping needs to be done lightly.
Then, shape it with 80-grit, go down to 150-grit. You can basically sand it down with 280 to 320-grit to get it all smooth. Lastly, put two heavy coats of 2K filler primer and let it dry.
If you have pinholes, tackle with glaze putty and wet sand it. You might have to re-prime the bodywork area and wash it down with 400-grit then youโre ready to go.
I have some videos on the stud welder and pulling out dents. Check out some of the videos below this blog! ๐

Question: Does bondo bite good into clear coat if sanded with 120-grit?
I would recommend 80-100 grit since 120-grit is getting into the finer side. I personally use 80-grit.
Question: What steps to take and what to look for when mixing meteor gray metallic gallon with a quart silver metallic to lighten it up?
I think youโll need two quarts of metallic to really lighten it up. It takes more light color to change it if youโre mixing light and dark colors together.
When you mix pearl or flake directly into your base coat, the paint will literally bury it. You will need to put a lot of it to get the effect and I donโt like doing that.
When I want to put a pearl effect in my paint, Iโd like to spray an intercoat or mix it with my clear coat.
On the other hand, candy is a urethane product and goes on top of a base coat.
If you want great mini flakes, check out the X Finishes Pearls and Flakes on Zoolaa. They are having a Halloween sale now which is $50 off on every spray gun PLUS a mystery gift. ๐คฉ
